From our Physical Therapist

Physical Therapy and Swimming Related Injuries

As the warmer months arrive, pools and beaches begin to welcome swimmers once again. For some, it’s a time to relax in the sun; for others, it’s the perfect opportunity to cool off and get back into swimming as a form of exercise.

Physical therapy plays a vital role in both preventing and treating swimming-related injuries by focusing on stroke mechanics, strength, and flexibility—both in and out of the water.

Injury Prevention techniques:

Strength and Conditioning: Improves shoulder and scapular stabilization and overall physical endurance

Postural Correction: Addresses postural imbalance to reduce stress or injuries on joints specific to shoulders and back

Treatment Techniques: Manual Therapy, Therapeutic Exercise, Aquatic Therapy - a low impact environment for rehabilitation

Common Injuries: Rotator Cuff, Swimmer’s Back, Knee Pain, Neck Pain

It is important to always seek help from a healthcare professional if pain persists, worsens or impacts your functional ability. The earlier you seek treatment can reduce the risk of minor injuries turning into major problems and limiting or preventing you from swimming or doing any other form of activities you enjoy doing.

To schedule an appointment with Merion’s onsite Physical Therapist Jennifer Manganaro, submit a Physical Therapy Request through the MCC App.
